The City of Houston is expanding its citywide municipal broadband
network to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of public
works, public safety, and public service operations. In addition,
the City is using grants funds and excess network capacity to
provide community broadband services across up to 30 Houston
neighborhoods.

Community Broadband
The network service includes both WiMax and WiFi connectivity.
WiMax is the next evolution of WiFi but it covers large
Free WiFi hot zone service is provided in high population areas
across the neighborhood. This service is provided through high
powered outdoor WiFi access points that allow users to connect to
the Internet with any compatible WiFi device. Users can extend the
range of the WiFi service with WiFi modems or other consumer
premise equipment.
